BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple calculation used to assess whether a person has a healthy body weight in relation to their height. It’s commonly used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health issues, but it’s not a direct measure of body fat.
BMI doesn't differentiate between muscle and fat. A muscular person may have a high BMI but low body fat.
1. Metric Units (kg/m²):
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2
- Weight is measured in kilograms (kg).
- Height is measured in meters (m).
2. Imperial Units (lbs/in²):
BMI = (weight (lbs) × 703) / height (in)2
- Weight is measured in pounds (lbs).
- Height is measured in inches (in).
Important Considerations:
- Body Composition: BMI doesn’t differentiate between muscle and fat. A muscular person may have a high BMI but low body fat.
- Age and Gender: BMI does not account for differences in body composition due to age, gender, or fitness levels.
- Health Indicators: BMI can give a rough idea about weight-related health, but it’s best used alongside other measurements (e.g., waist circumference, body fat percentage, or health screenings).
